Potential Contributions of an Engaged Senior

As a result of several workshops on the Role of Engaged Seniors in Society, held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada during the 1st half of 2010, the following potential contributions of an Engaged Senior were identified:

  • Acting as a sounding board
  • Advice on raising children
  • Advice on relationships
  • Advocacy
  • Being present at a personal level
  • Being present in the community
  • Keeping memories alive
  • Listening patiently
  • Mentoring skills and knowledge
  • Providing encouragement
  • Providing peer support
  • Providing Spiritual support
  • Providing Companionship
  • Providing support for those in grief & those dying
  • Providing support for integration into communities
  • Providing perspective
  • Providing temporary resources (loans of money or goods)
  • Providing an active model of an Engaged Senior
  • Relating & preserving traditions
  • Sharing life experiences
  • Visiting those in need
  • Volunteering

One of the elements discussed in this context is that an Engaged Senior usually replies to a request from someone, particularly in the case of younger members of their circle, rather than offering unsolicited advice.
